West participated in a 5-day outdoor school program at Camp Baker on Siltcoos Lake near Florence, OR. His outdoor education continued recreationally through camping, hiking, kayaking and backcountry adventuring until 2013 when he sustained a spinal cord injury. Since then he's found new ways to get out in nature. He has worked with OHSU's Oregon Office on Disability and Health for the last 4 years and is the founder of Oregon Spinal Cord Injury Connection, a community-based organization serving people with spinal cord injuries.

He serves on multiple advisory councils including the Oregon Health Policy Board's Health Equity Committee and Health Share of Oregon’s Community Advisory Council.
